The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old.
We understand that every child is unique and we use the EYFS framework to take every child’s unique qualities into account when planning their day.
Within the learning and development section of the EYFS there are seven areas of learning and development which we use to shape the educational programmes in our nursery.
The three prime areas reflect the key skills and capacities that all children need to develop and learn effectively. These three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.
Communication and Language development encompasses providing children with chances to immerse themselves in a diverse language-rich environment, fostering the growth of their confidence and abilities in self-expression, and enabling them to effectively engage in speaking and listening across various contexts.
Physical development encompasses creating opportunities for young children to engage in active and interactive experiences, fostering the development of their coordination, control, and movement. Additionally, it is important to assist children in understanding the significance of physical activity and in making healthy choices regarding food.
Personal, Social, and Emotional development entails assisting children in cultivating a positive self-concept and fostering positive relationships with others. This includes developing respect for others, acquiring social skills, learning to manage emotions, understanding appropriate behaviour in groups, and gaining confidence in their own abilities.
Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design constitute the distinct domains of learning and development within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It is within these domains that the foundational areas are expanded upon and reinforced.
Literacy development entails fostering the connection between sounds and letters, initiating the journey of reading and writing in children. Providing them with access to a diverse array of reading materials, including books, poems, and other written content, is crucial to sparking their interest.
Mathematics development encompasses offering children opportunities to enhance their abilities in counting, comprehending, and utilising numbers. It also involves solving basic addition and subtraction problems and describing shapes, spaces, and measurements.
Facilitating Understanding the World development in children entails leading them to comprehend their physical surroundings and community. This is achieved by providing opportunities for exploration, observation, and gaining knowledge about people, places, technology, and the environment.
Encouraging children's expressive arts and design development entails allowing them to experiment and engage with diverse mediums and materials. Additionally, it involves creating opportunities for them to express their thoughts, concepts, and emotions across various activities such as art, music, movement, dance, imaginative play, and design and technology.
